Tyres
Environmental benefits: The Tyre Industry Council has developed a “responsible recycle scheme”, which is designed to ensure that the reuse and recycling of tyres complies with legal requirements.
How to recycle: Tyres can no longer be placed in landfill sites. They have to be dismantled and all the parts reused or subject to some form of recovery process. They can be shredded and the metal sent for refuse, while the rubber is used for safety surfaces in children’s playgrounds or in road surfacing. The tyres can be heated, in the absence of air (pyrolysis), to produce gas, which can be used as a source of energy.
