Schools

In the build up to Green Britain Day, leading Olympic and Paralympics athletes made special visits to schools across Britain to find out how pupils are using resources and materials from www.jointhepod.org, EDF Energy's Programme for Greener Schools, to help the school reduce its impact on the environment.

Britain's youngest Paralympic gold medalist, Ellie Simmonds was suitably impressed: "It was exciting. Everyone at the school seems to understand the importance of doing their bit to become more sustainable. I was really impressed by the efforts of the pupils and how they are using the inspiration of Green Britain Day to do something positive."

In total, more than 1, 350 schools across the country signed up to the Green Britain Day Challenge with the aim of becoming more sustainable in areas such as saving electricity and water, recycling rubbish, conserving biodiversity and using more environmentally-friendly transport.

And on Green Britain Day itself, employees from EDF Energy joined forces with over 100 schools across the country to plant trees together. From Glasgow to Plymouth, pupils, parents, teachers and EDF Energy employees planted over 5000 saplings in school grounds.
